FAQs

What is psychological trauma?

Trauma is when something terrible happens, either as a once only event, or an going series of events and rather than our bodies processing these events they become stuck, or frozen, preventing us from growth as it is impossible to integrate new experiences into our lives

What issues can EMDR help with?

Broadly speaking, EMDR can help with

  • Traumatic events

  • Depression

  • Panic attacks

  • Anxiety

  • Addiction

  • Bereavement

  • Phobias

  • Grief

  • Self esteem and performance anxiety

  • Sleep problems

  • Stress

  • Pain relief

Is EMDR right for me?

The mind can heal in the same way that the body does. EMDR helps to reduce discomfort and enables us to assimilate learn and grow from new experiences, rather than being ‘stuck’.

Is EMDR like getting therapy?

EMDR is not a traditional talk-therapy like most other psychotherapies. It is an empirically supported (well-researched), and structured model of psychotherapeutic treatment that involves working with memories, body sensations, core-self beliefs, and emotions to eliminate the residential emotional, somatic, and cognitive remnants of painful past experiences. Much of the natural coping mechanism has been found to occur during sleep , when we experience REM or rapid eye movement sleep, which is recreated using bilateral eye movements. This is achieved by either following the therapists fingers or a moving bar of lights

What can I expect from a first meeting?

First meetings  are an opportunity for you to discuss what problems you would like help with and we would decide together how best to work together. It is an opportunity for you to decide whether this feels right for you.
